Things You Must Try When Living in Australia

Posted on 15/10/2020

There’s a reason Australia is one of the preferred destinations for transfer programs and international student experience. Not only does Australia have world class education programs, but it is a nation that is filled with gorgeous scenery, decadent food, diverse people and a world of experiences.

So, if you are fortunate enough to be living down under, here are some things you have to try!

Vegemite

Vegemite is an acquired taste, however, for most Aussies it is a staple breakfast food. A piece of buttered toast with a layer of vegemite spread holds the nostalgia of early mornings back in childhood days.

Vegemite is a yeast extract spread that is made from leftover brewers’ yeast extract and various vegetable and spice additives. It’s a dark, almost black colour and is one of the richest sources of Vitamin B. It has a very salty taste; however, you can’t say that you’ve lived in Australia without giving this a try at least once!

Surfing

Australia is blessed with some of the world’s best surf spots. And many Aussies see the ocean as their second home. So, this is a great place to develop your surfing skills. Many beaches hold private and group classes for those that want to learn how to surf.

And what a better way to get to know this country than by getting intimate with its beautiful emerald waters.

Befriend the Local Wildlife

The biodiversity in Australia is truly out of this world. From some astonishing mammals to stunning sea creatures, terrifying reptiles and exotic plants – there’s never a dull moment when exploring the wonders of Australian wildlife.

And there’s many ways to accomplish this. You could visit one of the many zoos and wildlife sanctuaries found in every state or you could visit a national park for a bushwalk to experience the flora and fauna in their natural habitat.

Feed kangaroos, hug a koala, make friends with a quokka, revel in the presence of an emu and take photos of the beautiful flowers that bloom. Your eyes won’t get enough of the beauty this country holds.

Find Yourself a Sausage Sizzle

Sneak into a university fair, find an RSL club along the coast or wait for election day – Aussies love a good sausage sizzle. This well-regarded culinary gem consists of a grilled or barbecued sausage (most commonly beef or pork) that is served on a slice of bread with grilled onions and tomato sauce and mustard.

Sausage sizzles are usually held as a free community event or as fundraisers for charities, schools, sports clubs and other organisations. And nothing beats a good, cheap feed here in Australia.

Spend the Arvo at the Beach

When the sun is out and the skies are clear, almost every Australian will be heading towards their closest beach. It is truly the heart of Australia’s culture – people of every colour, background, age will flock towards the beach for a cheeky bevo or to get a nice golden tan.

When you notice the sun shining on a summer’s day, it’s time to pack your sunscreen and towel and head on down to the beach of your choice. And no matter what part of Australia you’re in, you will have your pick of stunning beaches. From Coogee beach in NSW to Portsea in VIC, Cable beach in WA and so many more.

Check out the Local Art Scene

Australia has a growing and thriving art scene across the nation. From enchanting museums and local galleries to gigs at pubs and self-made plays at hole-in-wall theatres. There’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Take some time to watch a home-grown musical act or support your university’s theatre department and buy tickets to their latest show!
