The Australian Government offers a number of grants and scholarships* to help students with their studies. These scholarships are either offered directly by the Australian Government or are available through education providers. These scholarships can also be used towards the cost of your accommodation. Here are some of the scholarships that are available that you may be eligible for.
1) Tertiary Access Payment Schemes
The Tertiary Access Payment Schemes provide financial support to students who are moving from outer regional or remote areas for tertiary study.
Available to students who have finished year 12 or equivalent, the scheme offers a one-off payment of $5000 which is paid in two instalments.
An Australian resident
Should be doing a Vocational Educational and Training (VET) course at a university or non-university provider OR higher education course at a non-university provider OR a Higher education course at a participating university
From an outer regional, remote or very remote area
Moving to study at a tertiary education provider that’s more than 90 minutes away from your family home by public transport
Have completed year 12 or equivalent
Studying a tertiary course at certificate IV or above in the next available study period after year 12 with no gap year
Younger than 22 on the day you start your tertiary course.
Have parents or guardians whose income is under the current combined parental income limit of $250,000.
2) Rural and Regional Enterprise Scholarship (RRES)
The Rural and Regional Enterprise Scholarships (RRES) program helps Australians in regional and remote areas to access higher education, from Certificate IV through to PhD level. Available to eligible students, the scholarship supports flexible study arrangements.
Eligible students may receive up to $18,000 each (e.g. for a full-time, four-year qualification). Shorter, part-time qualifications are paid on a pro rata basis. An extra $500 is also available to support an internship.
Commencing a new course of study in 2021
Studying on campus, online or via distance education
Studying from six months full-time up to eight years part-time
3) Destination Australia Scholarship
Destination Australia provides funding to eligible tertiary education providers to offer scholarships to domestic and international students to study and live in regional Australia. The scholarship offers students an opportunity for Australian and International students to undertake education, training and research, and to experience life in regional and remote Australia.
